Derby County hosted Stoke City at the Pride Park Stadium on Matchday 8 of the 2021/22 EFL Championship season. The home team clinched a 2-1 victory to pick up their first victory at home, and second of the season. Max Bird gave them the lead after 31 minutes, followed by Curtis Davies extending the lead to two goals just three minutes after the first. The Potters were able to get a goal back in the second half through Thomas Ince, as the match ended 2-1.

Wayne Rooney set up the Derby County side in his preferred 4-2-3-1 formation, shifting to a 4-5-1 when out of possession. Sam Baldock led the line for The Rams, supported by three attacking midfielders Tom Lawrence, Ravel Morrison and Louie Sibley. Goalscorer Max Bird and Graeme Shinnie started as the holding midfielders, ahead of a back four of right-back Nathan Byrne, left-back Lee Buchan and centre-backs Phil Jagielka and goalscorer Curtis Davies. Kelle Roos started in between the sticks for them.

The average positions of the Derby County players show that they were playing in advanced positions on the field, with a lot of pressing when out of possession. The striker Baldock also had a deeper average position, as he was dropping deeper to help out the buildup and defence in midfield.

Michael O’Neill set up his Stoke City team in a 3-5-2 formation. transitioning into a 5-3-2 in the defensive phase. Joseph Bursik started for the Potters in goal, behind a back three of centre-backs Ben Wilmot, Harry Souttar and Leo Ostigard. Josh Tymon and Tom Ince were the two wing-backs, with a midfield three consisting of Sam Clucas, Mario Vrancic and Romaine Sawyers. Sam Surridge and Abdallah Sima were the two strikers up front for them.

The average positions of the Stoke City players show that they with a lot more attacking intent, as their players were in much more advanced positions compared to their opponents. Their strikers stayed upfront, and the wing-backs were also a constant threat going forward. Derby County had a decent match as they had an xG of 1.44 in the game where they attempted a total of 13 shots on the opposition goal. They had a total of four shots on target and were able to score two goals in the match. On the other hand, Stoke City had an xG of 1.69, as they also took a total of 13 shots in the game, with five on target, but were unable to score any goal. The visitors had much more attacks in the match than Derby, and also had 65% possession in the match.

Both teams had a similar xG in the game, but the Derby County team were able to score twice and win the game 2-1. Tom Ince had the highest individual xG in the game with 0.70 while Sam Baldock and Raven Morrison both took a total of four shots in the game, which was the highest. Harry Souttar had the highest number of passes in the final third, with 11.

The Rams took a total of 13 shots in the game, with half of them from inside the box and the rest from outside. They scored one goal from a long-range shot by Max Bird to open the scoring, followed by a Davies header from the centre of the box.

Stoke City also took a total of 13 shots in the game, with a few from close range, and a few from outside the box. They scored their only goal in the match through a left-footed shot from Tom Ince from inside the box.

The xT timeline of the match shows that Derby County had a good start in the match, creating some threat in the first half and scoring twice. After that, Stoke city dominated the entirety of the second half, creating a lot of threats and goalscoring opportunities. The xG timeline of the match shows a continuous increase in xG for both teams in the first and second half.

Stoke City’s pass matrix showed that they did not have a large number of passes in the match and did not have much possession. Lee Buchana had the maximum number of passes attempted with 46, Byrne received the most passes for the Rams with 22.

The pass matrix for The Potters shows that they completed a very high number of passes in the match and had a lot of possession. Ben Willmot attempted the most number of passes with 89, followed by Ostigard with 88. A lot of players received a large number of passes with Wilmot being the highest with 67, followed by Ostigard at 64 and Souttar with 64.

The passing zones of Derby County show that they completed most of their passes in the defensive areas, with a lot of passes on the centre of defence and midfield. Ravel Morrison put in three passes into the opposition box, which was the highest. They only put in a few crosses into the box, but had multiple smart passes around the box, helping them to score twice.

The pass zones of Stoke City show that they had a lot of passes in the match, especially on both wings and all over the midfield. Mario Vracic made six passes into the opposition box, while Josh Tymon made five. The visitors also put in a decent number of crosses into the box from both flanks.

The xT creation zones of the hosts, Derby county, show that they did not create a lot of threat in the major attacking positions upfront, except a few occasions in the opposition box. Ravel Morrison had the highest xT creation among the Rams.

Other than Ravel Morrison, Max Bird also had a decent xT creation from passing. Ravel Morrison was very effective in the game, as he also had the highest expected threat(xT) from his dribbling.

The xT creation zones of Stoke show that they created a decent amount of threat in various attacking positions around the opposition box. Substitute Nick Powell had the highest xT (expected threat) creation among the Reds.

Other than Nick Powell, Tom Ince and Mario Vrancic also had a high xT creation from their passes. In terms of xT creation from dribbles, Sam Clucal and Alfie Doughty had the highest xT creation for the Potters.

Wayne Rooney’s Derby county faced a large number of defensive duels in the match, most of them being in the defensive positions. Phil Jagielka won the most defensive duels for them with three.

There were a decent number of aerial duels in the match, most of them near the two boxes. Jagielka and Buchanan won the most aerial duels in the game, winning five each for their team.

The Rams were involved in a lot of loose ball duels in the match while defending and attacking. Lee Buchanan made four loose ball recoveries for them in the match, which was the highest among the Stoke City players.

The visitors faced most of their defensive duels in the match in defensive positions of the field. Ben Wilmot and Vrancic won four duels each for The Potters.

There were many aerial duels contested in the match, most of them faced in midfield and attacking areas. Harry Souttar won the most aerial duels in the game, winning seven of his duels.

Stoke City made most of their loose ball recoveries in the midfield areas. Sam Clucas made six recoveries, while  Harry Souttar made five recoveries in the match.

Stoke City should be disappointed with this result away from home, as they have come down to fifth in the table after starting the match week on third. Derby County and Wayne Rooney will be happy with their win, as it takes them up to 12th in the table with ten points from their eight games. Tom Ince had the highest individual xG in the match, while Mario Vrancic made the most passes into the opposition penalty area.
