Nottingham Forest hosted Cardiff City in the weekend action in EFL Championship. Despite gaining an upper hand earlier in the match Forest were unable to hold on to their lead and were defeated by Cardiff City 1-2.

Chris Hughton’s side lined up with a back four, comprising of Scott McKenna and Joe Worrall in the centre back position flanked by full-backs Max Lowe and Djed Spence. The four-man midfield consisted of Ryan Yates and James Garner in the central midfield while Brennan Johnson and Philip Zinckernagel occupied the wide positions. Cardiff lined up with a similar back four with Mark Harris and James Collins leading the attack.

The Cardiff fullbacks remained in their own half to block any attacks from wide areas. Their forward players played closely with the midfielders.

The stats show that this was a fiercely contested match. Cardiff’s xG of 1.64 surpassed that of Forest, 0.81. They had an almost equal number of shots and shots on target. Cardiff defended resolutely making 45 interceptions. Cardiff also made 32 recoveries in the opponent half. Forest did have more possession than Cardiff. Mark Harris had the highest xG of 0.61 while the comeback hero Rubin Colwill sits fourth in the xG chart. Marlon Pack made the highest recoveries in the opponent half.

Forest took 14 shots but were not accurate with their shots. Most of their shots came from outside the box.

Cardiff had a total of 18 shots, most of them being from outside the box. Most of their efforts from inside the box were either saved or were off target.

The xT timeline in the first half was dominated by Cardiff while Forest did recover in the later stages of the game. Their xG metric was fiercely competed while Forest started on top in the first half, the second half was dominated by Cardiff.

Max Lowe attempted the most number of passes for Forest, 63, while James Garner received the most.

Marlon Pack attempted the most passes for Cardiff City and Joel Bagan received the most, 19.

Forest’s passing zones suggest that they had more possession of the balls in wide areas. Forest attempted crosses from both the left and right-wing.

Cardiff attempted several crosses from both the left and right-wing, many of them were successful. They dominated the passing zones in the wide areas near the opposition box.

Forest were not threatening from many areas of the pitch, their highest xT coming from the left-hand side area near the opposition box. Max Lowe created the highest xT from his passes, 0.329.

Max Lowe also created the most xT from his dribbles. Lewis Grabban was wasteful from his passes.

Cardiff were successful in creating xT in wide areas of the pitch. Will Vaulks had the highest xT of 0.595 from his passes while Marlon Pack attempted the most passes with high accuracy.

James Collins was most successful in creating xT from his dribble while goal scorer Rubin Colwill followed closely.

Forest won most of their defensive duels in the left-hand side of their own half while they lost many on the right-hand side. Max Lowe competed in the majority of defensive duels for his team, eight while he was able to win only two of those.

Forests’ aerial duels map is similarly a mixed bag, while they did win many of their aerial duels in the central area of their own half, they won few near the opposition box. Ryan Yates was involved in 21 aerial duels, winning 10 of those.

Forest recovered most of their loose balls in their own half as well as half-spaces near the central zone. Lyle James lost 13 of his 15 aerial duels.

Cardiff were involved in defensive duels mostly in their own half. Curtis Nelson was involved in 10 defensive duels for his team, winning three of them.

Cardiff dominated in aerial duels near the opposition half, winning many of them. Kieffer Moore won all of his aerial duels,10 while Aden Flint won nine of his 11 aerial duels.

Cardiff engaged in loose ball duels in half-spaces near the central zones. They were more successful in recovering loose balls in wide areas. Aden Flint won six of his nine loose ball duels.

Things couldn’t be worse for Nottingham Forest as they have failed to register any wins in their last five matches.
