Alright, hands up.

It wasn’t the most complete 90 minute performance from Wayne Rooney on Saturday.

OneFootball Videos

The former England international looked like he was playing in lead boots for half the time as Derby went to Norwich looking for their first win of the season.

But Rooney has never really been a 90 minute player, really.

He’s a player all about moments, and the 34-year-old produced one of his very best moments on Saturday.

The veteran striker rolled back the years with a free kick, which was almost the mirror image of his very first for Manchester United against Fenerbahce all those years ago.

His late strike gave Derby a crucial 1-0 win and lifted the pressure slightly on manager Philip Cocu.

Honorable mentions

They were mentioned in dispatches last week for their brilliant away win at Accrington Stanley, but the most impressive thing at Oxford this weekend came off the pitch.

Manager Karl Robinson did himself, the club, and in all honesty, the game, proud on Saturday when he himself called off Oxford’s game with Crewe after Alexandra had travelled the 132 miles to the Kassam Stadium with a player who had tested positive for coronavirus earlier in the week.

It was a total shambles but thankfully the right decision was made in the end, with a revised date for the fixture to be determined soon.

Newport County are flying! The Welsh side claimed their third win of the season so far on Saturday, as they came from behind to score two late goals and beat Mansfield.

Michael Flynn’s side have one of the smallest budgets in the Football League, but so far have been punching well above their weight in League Two with an unbeaten start after four games.

Long may it continue.
