Leeds had to work hard to overcome League One Crewe and book their spot in the third round.

Townsend wins bad-tempered affair for the Toffees

Scorers: Lees 45′; Iwobi 26′, Townsend 80′

Everton eventually overcame Huddersfield despite being reduced to 10-men in the second half.

The Toffees went in front midway through the first half, when Tom Davies picked out Alex Iwobi to slot past the goalkeeper.

Moise Kean also had the ball in the net with the beautiful finish a few minutes later but with no VAR in the John Smith’s Stadium, the goal was ruled out for a very tight offside.

The Terriers then drew level on the stroke of half-time, when Tom Lees headed past Asmir Begović from a corner.

Into the second half and the hosts thought they’d gone 2-0 up when Matty Pearson headed in from another set-piece, but the goal was disallowed for offside against Fraizer Campbell.

And moments later, Everton went down to 10 men when Kean was shown a straight red card following an altercation with Sorba Thomas.

But it was the Premier League side who struck next, with Andros Townsend netting his first goal for the club after André Gomes’s cut-back, sparking jublilant celebrations in the away end.

Anwar El-Ghazi then made it 2-0 with a cheeky dinked penalty after Jaden Philogene-Bidace had been fouled in the box, before tapping in at the back post to grab his second in first half stoppage time.

Just after the hour mark, Archer increased Villa’s advantage to 4-0 with his second of the game, before Freddie Guilbert made it 5-0 with a superb strike.

And Archer wasn’t done there, as he completed his hat-trick late on to cap off a dream debut.
