Manchester United put one foot in the EFL Cup final last night as they cruised to a 3-0 win over Nottingham Forest.

It didn’t take long for the Red Devils to get off the mark, as Marcus Rashford continued his fantastic run of form by scoring the opening goal after six minutes.

The striker picked up the ball just after the half-way line and went on a dazzling solo run that beat two players before slotting home past a helpless Wayne Hennessey.

The game was an entertaining affair, as both sides looked to push forward. Forest thought they got back level through Sam Surridge, but it was ruled out for offside.

United went down the other end, and on the stroke of half time Wout Weghorst grabbed his first goal for the club after Hennessey saved Antony’s shot.

The second half continued to be an opening game, as Steve Cooper’s side tried to push for a goal as their chances of remaining in the tie hanged by a thread.

However, just before the 90th minute, Erik ten Hag’s side more or less wrapped up the contest, as Bruno Fernandes stroked home a lovely volley after Anthony Elanga scooped the ball up for the Portuguese.

Rashford continued to keep his rich vein of form going, with that now meaning the 25-year-old has scored 18 goals in all competitions this season, five of which have come in the EFL Cup as he has now scored in every round.

The England man completed 60 minutes and grabbed yet another goal and after the game he took to Twitter to react to the win. He wrote: “Job done. See you next week!”

Man United and Forest will battle it out in the return leg next Wednesday, as Cooper’s men have it all to do.

The Verdict

Since the World Cup, Rashford has come back a different player, one that looks hungry and determined to succeed.

This is probably the best moment of the striker’s career, and while many will wonder why he isn’t being rested and saved in games, Ten Hag will know the form he is in, he will want to keep playing, and teams will not want to come up against him.

United have more or less wrapped up this tie, and with their comfortable lead, it is likely that Ten Hag will look to rotate some players in the 2nd leg, meaning Rashford could be rested.
