Chelsea need shootout to see off Villa

Scorers: Werner 54′, Archer 63′.

Chelsea progressed after overcoming Aston Villa on penalties at Stamford Bridge.

The hosts made the breakthrough in the 54th minute when Reece James’ whipped cross found Timo Werner in at the back post, who nodded past Jed Steer.

However, teenager Cameron Archer equalised for the Villains with a powerful header after being picked out by Matty Cash.

The tie went to a penalty shootout, with Ashley Young hitting the crossbar and Kepa saving from Marvelous Nakamba to give Thomas Tuchel’s side the victory.

Hammers get sweet revenge on Ole’s Reds

Scorers: Lanzini 9′.

West Ham got their revenge for Sunday’s Premier League defeat by knocking Manchester United out of the EFL Cup.

Manuel Lanzini scored the only goal of the game when he was picked out by Ryan Fredericks unmarked 10 yards out before sweeping home.

The hosts had an abundance of chances to equalise with the best falling to substite Mason Greenwood after just coming on to the pitch but his powerful shot produced an incredible save from Hammers debutant Alphonse Areola.

Spurs escape Wolves fightback to progress on penalties

Scorers: Dendoncker 38′, Podence 58′.; Ndombele 14′, Kane 23′.

Tottenham fought off a spirited fightback from Wolves to book their place in the fourth round on penalties.

Spurs led after 14 minutes on when Tanguy Ndombele burst into the box before turning Willy Boly inside out before slotting past John Ruddy.

Harry Kane doubled their advantage with his first goal of the season, being played through on goal by Dele Alli before placing the ball into the bottom corner.

Leander Dendoncker pulled one back for the hosts with a powerful header after getting on to the end of Rayan Aït-Nouri’s corner, before Daniel Podence completed the comeback with a placed finish into the bottom corner after Hwang Hee-Chan had won the ball back high up.

To penalties it went with Ruben Neves blasting over the crossbar before Dendocker’s effort was saved by Pierluigi Gollini and Conor Coady hit the bar to gift Nuno Espírito Santo the win.

Gunners ease past Wimbledon

Scorers: Lacazette 11′, Smith Rowe 77′, Nketiah 80.

Arsenal eased into the next round after comfortably dispatching of League One side AFC Wimbledon 3-0 at the Emirates.

The Gunners moved in front from the spot after Gabriel Martinelli had been brought down in the area, Alexandre Lacazette converted the resulting penalty.

Emile Smith Rowe added a second after Lacazette’s cross deflected back into the path of the youngster, before Eddie Nketiah put the result beyond doubt with a delicate, back-heeled finish after being found by Cédric’s cut-back.

Lookman the hero for much-changed Foxes

Scorers: Lookman 47′, Iheanacho 88′.

Ademola Lookman’s first goal for Leicester helped the Foxes side-step a tricky away tie and progress.

The on-loan winger slotted into the top corner right at the start of the second half when Kelechi Iheanacho’s shot deflected into his path.

Iheanacho then got on the scoresheet himself in the dying minutes with a rocket which sealed the win for Brendan Rodgers’ side.

Seagulls soar into last 16

Scorers: Connolly 33′, 39′.

The Seagulls booked their place in the last-16 courtesy of an Aaron Connolly double.

The Irish striker fired Brighton in front after being played in by Alexis Mac Allister before seeing his shot take a slight deflection before rippling the back of the net.

That same duo linked up again for the second, before Connolly curled the ball past Steven Benda from close range.
