Tony Mowbray opens up on signing Tottenham Hotspur starlet Dilan Markanday

According to the Lancashire Telegraph, Blackburn Rovers manager Tony Mowbray has hinted that Tottenham Hotspur forward Dilan Markanday would be an excellent fit for his team.

The youngster has shown incredible growth while featuring for Spurs in the Premier League 2 this season. The 20-year-old already bagged 12 goals and assisted seven more in 18 matches across all competitions for the club’s reserves. Markanday was an unused substitute during a Premier League game against Crystal Palace during the reign of Nuno Espírito Santo.

Even though Dilan has given enough reasons to be handed a new contract, the Spurs board are yet to tie him down to a new deal. They now risk losing him in the summer when his current contract expires.

Championship team Blackburn Rovers is in the hunt for a forward and are believed to be interested in signing the 20-year-old. The Ewood Park outfit is currently third in the English second tier and remains in contention to secure promotion to the Premier League.

When asked about the rumoured interest in a recent interview, the Rovers manager suggested that the Tottenham youngster certainly fits his playing strategy. However, he also admitted to being unaware of where the club stands regarding a transfer.

“I don’t know how close any deals are. Dilan Markanday has won a couple of player of the month awards in the Under-23s league. He’s a young boy; we’re aware of him. I’m not sure how close anything is. He fits the profile of the type of footballer we might want to sign somewhere down the line as a lot of clubs in this league would.”

Too good to lose?

Dilan has already shown impressive performances for Spurs U18 and U23 sides. He certainly has the potential to become a future Premier League star. Even though he is still young, his price could skyrocket in the transfer market after playing one season of top tier football.

Our team currently lacks depth in the frontline. There is a paucity of quality alternatives for Heung-min Son, Lucas Moura, and Harry Kane. Steven Bergwijn has been linked with a move away while Bryan Gil and Jack Clarke still have much to prove.

While Markanday is not a first-team player yet, he has the potential to develop into one. Losing him for nothing this summer would be a poor approach by the club. Whether common ground will be found between the player and the club in the weeks to come remains to be seen.
