Ajax chief executive Edwin van der Sar has suggested asking Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag for tips on how to beat Liverpool after the Amsterdam giants were matched with the Merseysiders in the Champions League group stage.
Napoli and Rangers make up a tough Group A for Liverpool, who have been in three of the last five Champions League finals. Ajax, meanwhile, recorded six wins from six in the group stage last season and went within a kick of meeting Liverpool in the 2019 final when Ten Hag was in charge.
Ajax will travel to Anfield on Matchday 2 on 13 September, with the reverse fixture at the Johan Cruyff Arena scheduled for matchday six on 1 November.
Ten Hag, who traded Ajax for United in May, masterminded an unexpected Premier League win for United over Jurgen Klopp’s last Monday night, breaking a run of two embarrassing defeats.
Van der Sar maintains a good relationship with those at Old Trafford, having spent six successful years of his own playing career in Manchester and continuing to deal with the club on a regular basis – talks have been ongoing over a deal for Antony since Ten Hag’s switch.
“Maybe we can get some tips from Erik on how he prepared the team so it would be nice to have a little bit of co-operation that way,” Van der Sar said after the draw, via The Times.
“We have lost six players this summer - that’s a lot, and we also have a new coach, but we are still confident we can put together some great performances in the Champions League.”
