The Addicks started their 2023/24 campaign with a 1-0 win over Leyton Orient at The Valley, and they will host the same opponents in their first home league game this season.

Nathan Jones' side got off to the perfect start in League One last week, securing a narrow victory against Wigan at the Brick Community Stadium courtesy of Lloyd Jones' well-taken finish. They were knocked out of the Carabao Cup by Birmingham City in midweek, but if they can pick up another three points at the weekend, it will have been a good start to the season for the Londoners.

Charlton Athletic team news

Charlton are likely to start in the same 3-5-2 formation that they have used in their first two games this season.

The Addicks have a couple of injury concerns ahead of their fixture against Leyton Orient.

They will be without striker Miles Leaburn, who is yet to return from a hamstring injury that has kept him sidelined since last year.

It remains to be seen whether summer signing Matty Godden will be fit to play a part, after he missed the first two games of the season with a tight hamstring.

Predicted Charlton Athletic XI

GK - Will Mannion

Article image:Edwards starts, 3-5-2: The predicted Charlton Athletic XI to face Leyton Orient

Will Mannion has started the Addicks' first two games of the season, keeping a clean sheet against Wigan before being beaten by a wonder strike against Birmingham on Tuesday night.

Charlton are yet to sign another goalkeeper, with the number one shirt still vacant, so the 26-year-old is set to make a third consecutive start for his new club.

RWB - Kayne Ramsay

Kayne Ramsay impressed during the opening day win at Wigan, and made a crucial last-ditch challenge to prevent Thelo Aasgaard from giving the hosts the lead.

He came off the bench in midweek, but is likely to return to the starting line-up for the visit of Leyton Orient.

CB - Alex Mitchell

Alex Mitchell is another player who was rested on Tuesday night, having played the majority of last week's victory over Wigan with a bandage around his head.

Charlton signed the defender from Millwall this summer, and he is expected to slot back into the Addicks' back three at the weekend.

CB - Lloyd Jones

Last week's match-winner, Lloyd Jones, captained Charlton on Tuesday night, with skipper Greg Docherty on the bench.

The 28-year-old is poised to make his third start of the season against the O's.

CB - Macaulay Gillesphey

Macaulay Gillesphey has also started the Addicks' first two games of the season, and is likely to be in the starting line-up again this weekend.

Youngster Zach Mitchell impressed from the bench in midweek, but Gillesphey is likely to be given the nod, especially considering that he is naturally left-footed.

LWB - Josh Edwards

Article image:Edwards starts, 3-5-2: The predicted Charlton Athletic XI to face Leyton Orient

Josh Edwards was voted player of the match via the club's official X account last weekend, before being named amongst the substitutes on Tuesday night.

Thierry Small did not have his best game in a Charlton shirt after replacing Edwards in midweek, so the summer signing from Dunfermline Athletic is set to return to the side on Saturday.

DM - Conor Coventry

Conor Coventry has had a steady start to the season at the base of Charlton's midfield, and is likely to make his third start of the campaign this weekend.

Given that Terry Taylor looks to be surplus to requirements at The Valley, there isn't really anyone else in the Addicks' squad who could start in the holding midfield role.

CM - Greg Docherty

Charlton's new captain and number 10, Greg Docherty, signed for the club from Hull City this summer.

He came off the bench against Birmingham in the Carabao Cup, but is bound to return to the starting XI and lead the team out for the first home game of the season in League One against Leyton Orient.

CM - Luke Berry

Signing Luke Berry after his release from Luton Town was a real coup for Charlton this summer, and he made his first start for the Addicks on Tuesday night after being named on the bench for the trip to Wigan last week.

It would be no surprise if he makes his first league start for his new club on Saturday, as Charlton look to pick up another important three points.

ST - Gassan Ahadme

Article image:Edwards starts, 3-5-2: The predicted Charlton Athletic XI to face Leyton Orient

Gassan Ahadme started up front for Charlton against Wigan last week, before being rested for the game against Birmingham.

The summer arrival from Ipswich Town is the Addicks' new number nine following the departure of Alfie May, and he is likely to start against Leyton Orient. The last time he played a League One fixture at The Valley was for Cambridge United last season, when he scored two late goals to secure a 2-2 draw.

ST - Tyreece Campbell

Article image:Edwards starts, 3-5-2: The predicted Charlton Athletic XI to face Leyton Orient

Forward Tyreece Campbell is another player who has started both of Charlton's first two fixtures. After enjoying a prolific pre-season, the 20-year-old missed a penalty which could have given Charlton the lead against Birmingham in midweek.

There are a few players who could start up top for the Addicks against the O's, especially if Matty Godden is deemed fit to play, but Jones seemingly has faith in Campbell to thrive in his new role as a striker, so he may be selected in the starting line-up again at the weekend.
