Edward Sturing has been appointed as Vitesse’s new interim head coach until the winter break. After that, the club will make a decision as to who should take over on a long-term basis. Former Vitesse players, Tim Cornelisse and Nicky Hofs will work as Sturing’s assistants.

Last week, former Derby County, PSV Eindhoven and Fenerbahçe boss Phillip Cocu stepped down from his role as Vitesse manager. The 53-year-old had endured a dreadful start to the season, with Vitesse sitting rock bottom of the Eredivisie table on just eight points after twelve matches. Phillip Cocu’s final game as Vitesse head coach was a 3-1 home defeat to Heerenveen. Supporters expressed their discontent by displaying banners demanding that Cocu leave the club.

Edward Sturing is now tasked with pulling them out of the drop zone. As a player, he featured 329 times over 12 years for Vitesse. The 60-year-old is now returning for his seventh spell in a coaching role at the club. Vitesse travel to the Johan Cruyff Arena this Saturday as they take on Ajax. An incredibly tough task for Sturing.
