Borussia Dortmund interim coach Edin Terzić is refusing to bask too much in the glory of DFB Pokal success as his side’s Champions League ambitions still hang in the balance.
BVB beat RB Leipzig 4-1 in Berlin on Thursday to lift the trophy, but securing a top four place is also crucial to the club’s plans for next season and beyond.
“It hasn’t really sunk in yet, we haven’t had the time for that,” Terzić said ahead of Sunday’s visit to Mainz for their penultimate game of the Bundesliga season.
“We’re not only starting to focus on this today. We promised ourselves a few weeks ago that we wanted to achieve both objectives.
“We promised ourselves that we’d give everything to get six more points as cup winners. We’ve put ourselves in a great position, but there’s no point in letting up now.”
Dortmund’s hopes were greatly improved by Eintract Frankfurt’s shock 4-3 defeat to relegated Schalke on Saturday.
That leaves Frankfurt one point behind Dortmund with a game more played.
As a result, victory at the Opel Arena will guarantee that BVB get to dine at Europe’a top table again next season.
