Speaking during a press conference, Borussia Dortmund’s head coach Edin Terzić has given his thoughts on his side’s first three games and the upcoming clash against SC Freiburg.

It’s a massive game for both sides. 4th vs 5th and locked on 34 points, either side can take a massive step to further securing a Champions League space, albeit with plenty of football still to be played.

Speaking about Freiburg’s impressive start to 2023, Terzić analysed: “The game against Wolfsburg was the first after the winter break. After that, they played great games against Frankfurt and Augsburg. They showed the right reaction.”

The 40-year-old continued: “I was impressed by how they handled it. They stayed in their system the whole game because they believed in it. Even with a 0:5 deficit, they continued to do everything as if it were 0:0.”

The BVB coach summed up the upcoming occasion by saying it will be “an intense game that will be tight again. But we are ready.”

Terzić is still without Mateu Morey and Thomas Meunier, while Salih Özcan is missing through suspension. The coach hinted that it’s possible that Emre Can will start in defensive midfield against Freiburg.

“He is very strong in one-on-one combat, very strong in ground and aerial duels. And he’s really good on the ball, shows himself in good spaces,” explains Terzić. “He took the chance on Sunday. We hope that he will continue to perform like this because then he will be an important player.

After a poor run of results at the end of 2022, it’s been a bright start for Borussia Dortmund. Should they make it four wins from four against a top opponent this weekend, it will provide a huge boost for the team and fans. However, Terzić understands that one win doesn’t make a season.

“Three wins will not be enough to achieve our goals. Training during the week was very intense. That is the performance culture that we want.”
