Manchester City are wanting to retain the services of Ederson for the 2025/26 season despite the risk of losing the Brazilian on a free transfer next summer.
The future of the long-serving City goalkeeper has been one of the headline talking points of the summer transfer window, with fresh interest emerging from Turkish giants Galatasaray in recent weeks.
That interest, fuelled by a belief that Manchester City would be willing to cash in before Ederson enters the final few months of his existing contract, has now encountered resistance from inside the Etihad Stadium.
Ederson has just one year remaining on his deal, and while City have not yet triggered any fresh extension, there is a growing feeling the club may value his presence and experience more than any short-term financial return.
Pep Guardiola has continued to publicly support the 31-year-old, and it has been hinted at various points during the summer that no final decision on a sale would be made without direct input from the manager himself.
The Brazilian has won 13 trophies during his eight-year spell in Manchester and remains an influential voice within the dressing room, with his consistent availability and distribution qualities crucial to City’s tactical setup, even as competition from Stefan Ortega intensified.
Now, according to the information of The Independent’s Richard Jolly, Manchester City want to keep Ederson as part of their plans for the 2025/26 season, as opposed to selling their No.1 choice goalkeeper to Galatasaray this summer.
There have been reports in recent days suggesting that the Turkish giants have agreed personal terms with the 31-year-old and are confident of signing him, although City want to ensure he stays despite the risk of losing him on a free next summer when his contract expires.
Should Ederson depart the Etihad Stadium this summer, Manchester City could then turn to James Trafford – currently starring for Burnley but available via a buy-back option included in the deal that took the player to Turf Moor from the City Football Academy in 2023.
Trafford is seen internally as a viable long-term candidate for the No.1 shirt should City eventually part ways with Ederson. The 22-year-old England international has impressed and is open to a return to the Etihad Stadium under the right conditions.
Manchester City hold a buy-back clause believed to be worth around £40 million, which could prove decisive in the final weeks of the window should they need to act quickly, although the club hold intentions of striking a deal at below that sum.
Beyond Trafford, the Premier League giants have also tracked Porto’s Diogo Costa, although interest has cooled in recent days, while Michele Di Gregorio has made clear his commitment to Juventus.
For now, Manchester City appear determined to retain control over Ederson’s future rather than reacting to external interest. The message being conveyed to potential suitors is clear: the Brazilian remains a core part of Pep Guardiola’s short-term planning, even if a summer 2026 departure on a free becomes a possibility.
