Last week was a tough week for Ederson. Up until the closing stages of Manchester City’s 3-2 defeat to Real Madrid City’s number-one keeper had put in a fine display. He had kept his team in that game with several crucial saves. But two late errors from the Brazilian international took the gloss off of his performance. During Manchester City’s pivotal 4-nil win over Newcastle Ederson more than redeemed himself. In the process, he also set a new Premier League record for assists by a goalkeeper.

In terms of saves Ederson only had one significant save to make yesterday. He made a smart save from a Lewis Miley strike midway through the second half to prevent Newcastle from making the score 3-1. In possession the Brazilian keeper was superb. He played a key role in helping Manchester City rediscover their passing game. Ederson’s ability with the ball was key in this. He was calm in possession, and the threat he posed with the long ball was always a constant threat to Newcastle’s defence. It was this attribute that saw Ederson set a new Premier League record yesterday.
