The Real Madrid winger wrote on his Instagram account: “A page turns today… Thank you for your love.

“Thank you for your unparalleled support. Thank you for all this happiness shared since 2008. I have decided to put an end to my international career. The succession is ready. I will miss you.”

Hazard was captain of the Belgium side that progressed to the 2018 World Cup semi-finals before being knocked out by the eventual winners France.

He missed the Euro 2020 quarter-final defeat to Italy through injury in a story which has affected his career in recent years, having only made three LaLiga appearances so far this season.

The forward featured in all three games as Belgium were knocked out of a group consisting of Croatia, Canada and Morocco in Qatar.
