A City source has told Football Insider that the club are not expected to follow up with a fresh swoop for Nketiah in January even if Arsenal do trigger the release clause in his Leeds loan deal.

The south-west outfit do not have the funds to also afford the £35,000-a-week wages of the England Under-21 sensation.

Bristol City have been linked again with Nketiah over the last week amid his struggles to secure a place in Marceo Bielsa’s starting XI.

Nketiah enhanced his reputation with a hat-trick for Aidy Boothroyd’s side last night in their 5-1 thrashing of Austria to take his tally for the international break to four goals.

But the 20-year-old has yet to start a Championship match for Leeds during his season-long loan and this has led to speculation he will return to his parent club in January.

Arsenal are able to activate the release clause dependent on Nketiah’s game time.

He has been a substitute in seven of Leeds’ last eight Championship matches but his only two starts for the club have come in the League Cup.

Bristol City were beaten by Leeds to the signing of Nketiah in August but subsequently signed Afobe on a season-long loan from Stoke City.

He started the season well before tearing his anterior cruciate ligament and the Championship club are now wrapping up the signing of former Spain Under-21 international striker Rodri as a replacement.

As revealed by Football Insider, the free agent started a medical yesterday and is set to sign a contract that runs for the rest of the season.
