Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has revealed that Alexander Isak was sent home ahead of the pre-season clash with Celtic. The Scottish Champions thrashed the Magpies 4-0 thanks to goals from Arne Engels, Johnny Kenny, Yang and Liam Scales.

Isak has been subject of transfer interest from Liverpool, who have been linked with a £150m swoop for the player. Not only that, a Saudi Pro League side have made a bid for the St James’ Park star.

Speaking after the game, as reported by Record Sport, Howe admitted that the Swedish striker was in contention to be involved at Celtic Park but the speculation resulted in Howe deciding to send the player back to Newcastle.

“He travelled to Glasgow with us but I decided to send him home due to the speculation around him.

“The last thing he wanted was to be sat in the stand watching – that wasn’t fair to him. But I’m confident he will be a Newcastle player come the end of the window.”

Despite Isak not being involved, Newcastle fielded a competitive squad featuring two strong XIs. Despite this, they were well beaten by Celtic in what was an enjoyable afternoon for the Hoops.

The Newcastle manager praised Brendan Rodgers’ side and Celtic Park for giving the Magpies a stern test during pre-season.

“It was a great atmosphere and stadium to play in. It was a good standard of football for so early in pre-season. Whoever Celtic draw in the Champions League will be in for some tough games.”

Celtic continue their pre-season efforts on Thursday with a game against Ajax in Como. Brendan’s side have been ramping up their preparations ahead of the new campaign and will be eager to bring more talent into the squad.
