Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has said he has been through a ‘range of emotions’ following his recent hospitalisation with pneumonia.
Howe has missed Newcastle’s last three fixtures after becoming unwell with the illness earlier this month. The 47-year-old spent around a week in hospital as a result, before surprising his Newcastle staff with a return to training on Wednesday.
Howe is expected to take to the touchline when Newcastle face Ipswich Town in the Premier League on Saturday.
His return is a huge boost, as the Magpies battle for Champions League qualification. Assistant manager Jason Tindall oversaw wins over Crystal Palace and Manchester United in his absence, before defeat at Aston Villa last weekend. Newcastle are fifth in the table heading into the weekend.
Speaking at his pre-match press conference, Howe admitted he is still ‘not 100%’ but is glad to have returned to the club.
“I’m OK. I’m not 100% in my body but I’d like to think I’m very close to 100% in my mind, which is the most important thing. I’m well enough to face you guys today.
“Difficult [last few weeks]. I try to take a positive from every experience, I think that’s really important, but this has been a real challenge because your health you take for granted – I certainly have.
“When you don’t have the luxury of feeling normal it can be very difficult, so I have certainly been through a range of emotions. Thankfully, I feel like I’m on the road to recovery, which is the most important thing.
“I am delighted to be here.”
