Wednesday night saw Eddie Howe and his Newcastle United team become mathematically safe from relegation.

Leeds had to beat Chelsea last night for there still to be a chance of NUFC going down, however, the Elland Road side lost 3-0 and are in deep trouble in eighteenth place with two games to go.

In contrast, Newcastle United are full steam ahead in making preparations for the 2022/23 Premier League season.

Eddie Howe met the media on Thursday morning for his pre-match Arsenal media duties.

The Newcastle United Head Coach giving his views on reaching safety and now the challenges that lie ahead…

Eddie Howe speaking to the media – Thursday 12 May 2022:

“It’s an amazing feeling to be mathematically safe.

“It’s great to finally have achieved the objective we set out to do and full credit to the players who, from minute one, have given us everything.

“Everyone associated with the club has played their part in what has been a remarkable turnaround in form, which we needed. To have two games spare to do it in is not something we thought we’d be able to do but it’s great to be in this position.”

Eddie Howe on the final two games:

“We’re really keen to end the season with two very good performances.

“It’s so important we perform in our last home game and leave a good feeling with our supporters for the summer, and whet their appetite for what’s going to come next year.”

Eddie Howe on Elliot Anderson:

“We’re very pleased for him.

“We didn’t necessarily want to pitch him into League Two, we felt he was better than that level, but he’s excelled.

“It’s difficult to go out as a young player and make a difference but he made an incredible difference.

“He will be involved in the pre-season games and we will make a decision then, whether he needs another loan or whether he is going to stay with us.”

Eddie Howe on the summer:

“FFP does impact what we can do in the summer but it doesn’t mean we’re totally without ambition.

“We’re well aware that we have to change the squad and we have to make improvements but it’s going to be a difficult balance.

“We’ve sat down and discussed the squad and I think we have a very good vision of where we want to take the team.

“Now the hard part comes where you have to reshape the squad, both ins and outs, and try to come back with a better squad.”
