Eddie Howe admits that Newcastle United are not “close” to making any more new signings with 11 days remaining in the summer transfer window.

The Magpies have endured a wretched window, missing out on numerous targets while they are also in danger of losing star striker Alexander Isak as he pushes for a move to Liverpool.

Newcastle have had better luck of late in the transfer market, adding Jacob Ramsey, Malick Thiaw and Aaron Ramsdale alongside Anthony Elanga and Antonio Cordero, both of whom arrived earlier in the summer.

However, the Tyneside outfit still require more additions as they prepare to compete in the UEFA Champions League this season. At least one new striker is needed to replace Callum Wilson, and they could need another in case Isak departs.

Newcastle reportedly had a bid worth up to £40 million for Yoane Wissa rejected by Brentford, while they have also been linked with Wolves‘ frontman Jorgen Strand Larsen.

“We’re working on incomings; I wouldn’t say we’re close,” Howe told his pre-match press conference ahead of Monday night’s clash with Liverpool.

“We still have a little bit of time but it’ll go quickly. The squad is in a really good place, but we’re still looking to replace Callum Wilson. That’s the big area we’re focusing on.”

Howe admits it’s “possible” that no new names arrive through the door at St James’ Park before the transfer window closes. But he adds that the club have to be mindful not to put themselves in a situation where they have to sell players to avoid breaching the Premier League’s financial rules.

“We are still actively in the market but any transfer has to be right,” he said. “With PSR you are always trying to manage that situation. We have to be careful with what we do. We can’t allow ourselves to go into a difficult moment when we are forced to sell a player like Elliot Anderson and Yakuba Minteh.”

Asked if he is looking forward to the end of the transfer window, Howe replied: “I’ll be pleased when it’s here, but pleased if we get what we want.

“Whenever you go through a transfer window, there’s always ups and downs. It feels like there’s been a lot of downs in this one, but some big positives as well and that shouldn’t be forgotten.

“The players we’ve signed are very good and they’ll add a lot to the squad.

“Of course, there’s one big, challenging situation that’s not resolved, but from that side, I can’t wait for the end of the window so we can get back to focusing on what we need to do which is try and win football matches to be successful.”

The transfer window for Premier League clubs closes at 7PM BST on Monday, 1 September.
