Ed Woodward hails Manchester United’s summer transfer business | OneFootball

Manchester United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward has hailed Manchester United’s summer transfer business ahead of the rest of the season.

The most recent window is widely regarded as one of the best under Woodward, with several world-class players walking through the gates at Old Trafford.

Jadon Sancho, who was strongly linked with a move to the club in 2020, finally completed his long-awaited transfer whilst Raphael Varane’s arrival was more than welcome.

Little will compare with Cristiano Ronaldo’s return to the club, however, as the 36-year-old formally completed his homecoming on deadline day. Ronaldo was linked with a move to Manchester City but United flexed their muscles to seal his second coming at the club.

Woodward, who will step down from his role at Manchester United at the end of this calendar year, says the team has been ‘significantly strengthened’ this summer.

“We significantly strengthened the squad over the summer, with the addition of Cristiano Ronaldo, Raphael Varane, Jadon Sancho and Tom Heaton,” he is quoted as saying on the official Manchester United website.

“These signings have demonstrated our continued ability to attract some of the world’s best footballers to Old Trafford, and our firm commitment to helping Ole deliver success on the pitch.

“We have been clear in our strategy to build a squad with a blend of top-class recruits and homegrown talent, comprising a balance of youth and experience, with the aim of winning trophies and playing attacking football the Manchester United way.

“As part of this, we have continued to strengthen our recruitment and scouting processes, and we have also increased our investment in the Academy, to ensure that this success is sustainable. While squad-building is a constant process, we are more confident than ever that we are on the right track.”

In addition to the three marquee signings in Sancho, Varane, and Ronaldo, there was also a mention for Heaton, who joined on the periphery early in the window. The former Aston Villa and Burnley goalkeeper is, however, unlikely to feature much this season.
