Jurgen Klopp believes that Ibrahima Konate and Virgil van Dijk could form a commanding partnership at the heart of the Liverpool defence next season.

The Reds’ first piece of transfer business this summer has already been completed with the former Red Bull Leipzig player joining to bolster the club’s defensive ranks.

Indeed, he looks a physically imposing player at the back and could be quite the hit at Liverpool, particularly when he begins working and learning with someone like Van Dijk.

And, as per The Athletic, the early suggestion is it could be those two that work together at the heart of the Reds’ defence:

Of course, you need competition for places and the likes of Joe Gomez, Joel Matip and Nat Phillips will all want to push themselves and try and feature alongside Van Dijk, who is obviously the club’s number one centre-half.

Konate has been signed to add to the first team, though, and if he can show his quality and impress quickly alongside Van Dijk, we could have a new centre-back partnership for next season.

Time will tell, of course, and it’s all about who steps up both in training and in matches.
