Derby County have had to say goodbye to one of their top young talents this week as Dylan Williams has left for Premier League giants Chelsea.

Wayne Rooney confirmed late last week that a fee had been agreed with a top flight club for the services of the 18-year-old, with that club later being confirmed to be the Blues.

Whilst the Rams are going through challenging times, their administrators have intended to keep Rooney’s squad together for the most part instead of cashing in on their top talents unless acceptable bids come in.

Has former Derby County man Will Hughes ever played in the Premier League?

Yes No

The situation was different with Williams however as because he was not signed to professional terms yet, Chelsea were free to swoop for the left-sided player.

Williams made six appearances in the Championship this season for County, making his first start in a goalless draw with West Bromwich Albion back in September at left wing back.

He will now head to Stamford Bridge though to link up with the Blues’ development squad but he has since left a parting message to the club and fans following his departure.

The Verdict

It was going to be tough this season for Williams to get regular football with Derby unless Lee Buchanan was sold but he still gained some vital experience.

This though is an opportunity that Rooney and Derby could not turn down for the teenager, who is now set to continue his development at fantastic facilities.

The Cobham training ground has helped some talented youngsters hone their craft before either being loaned out by Chelsea or moved on – or even graduating into the senior squad – and Williams could go any of those three ways in the next couple of years.

Rest assured though he will become a better player in the right hands but it’s just a shame for Rams fans that they will not get to see the wing-back develop in their care.
