New Everton boss Sean Dyche hailed the “rocking” atmosphere at Goodison Park that saw the Toffees win his first game in charge against Arsenal in a 1-0 win.

The Premier League leaders had only lost one match in 19 this season before coming up against Everton but James Tarkowski’s header 60 minutes into the tie inflicted a second league defeat on Mikel Arteta’s side.

Dyche replaced Frank Lampard earlier this week and the new Everton boss gave his reaction to his first match in charge, he said:”It’s all about the players and they are the focal point for me. They have taken a lot on this week. The minimum requirement is maximum effort and we saw that today.

“They have been in a position where it has not been nice for anyone. I still believe we can improve with our play.

“I’m delighted for James Tarkowski. I’ve taken great joy in the development of his career.

“It gives us a platform to move forward. We have crammed a lot in this week. To get a win against top of the league…we managed to calm the game down. I want to them to understand the basics of the game.”

Dyche added to BBC Sport: “I like these 1-0 wins. A lot of work has been done this week and the players’ honesty has been invaluable to us. There had to be a base to work from. Our plan? Stop it going in our net, put it in their net.

“We tried to plan five weeks of pre-season into a week. We gave the players a lot of information and they have accepted that. It’s a starting point – that is all it is.

“The fans are going to be massive for us. I have been here [Goodison Park] when it has been rocking. It was rocking today. But we have to give the fans something.

“Of course I’m going to drive home and think what a great start but I’m not naive. We have to keep working and improving.”

Match-winner Tarkowski told BT Sport: “What an atmosphere. Fair play to the fans, its been tough times. It’s been a change of management that we’ve had to buy into straight away.

“It’s been tough for us and for the fans and for the staff. Hopefully it’s the turning point. We’ve got to get our heads down and crack on.

“I need to score more to be fair. I’m good in my own box, I just need a few more in the other box.

“We’ve not lacked technical ability (this season), we’ve just lacked a bit of grit at times. That’s what fans want to see.”
