Dwight Yorke launches scathing attack on Leny Yoro and Joshua Zirkzee signings | OneFootball

Former Manchester United striker Dwight Yorke has launched a shock attack on Erik ten Hag’s side’s transfer business so far.

After years of lethargic starts to transfer windows, the Red Devils have impressed many with their efficient start to this summer’s market.

They have captured two supremely talented young players who were both highly coveted by other clubs.

Impressively, striker Joshua Zirkzee seemed destined for AC Milan and defender Leny Yoro was on his way to Real Madrid according to many in the media, but United were able to beat the odds and deliver both players well before the club’s pre-season tour of the United States.

One man who has not been so impressed by United’s business, however, is that of former striker Yorke.

Speaking to BoyleSports (via TEAMTALK) he questioned the logic of bringing in such a young player in Yoro to the Premier League: “Manchester United are bringing in Leny Yoro and asking an 18-year-old to come in at such a difficult time and asking them to help raise your own level. The Premier League is the toughest place to sort of apply your trade for the first time.”

The former Trinidad and Tobago international then turned his fire towards Dutch striker Zirkzee, claiming he had a “decent” season at Bologna but queried why he was not able to start for the Netherlands.

Commenting on the Zirkzee deal, Yorke opined, “that’s a red flag for me when you come in at the United for that sort of fee. In recent years the club have brought in middle of the road players rather than the crème de la crème players that they should be getting.”

“United should be signing the very best players in Holland and the best players in whatever national team they are playing for, United are not in the position to do that anymore and it worries me,” he continued.

Both takes seem quite harsh and certainly are not what most pundits have made of both signings.

Yoro is judged by many as a generational talent and has already played two seasons of senior French football at LOSC Lille. What’s more, it seems harsh to judge a player for not starting for a national team when this choice so often comes down to the personal preference of a manager.

Not many would sensibly try and argue United should have re-signed Memphis Depay or Wout Weghorst instead of Zirkzee, despite the fact Ronald Koeman prefers both to start for the Dutch national team.

In addition, Ineos have already stated that they will avoid trying to sign ready-made stars and will aim to snap up the most exciting up and coming talent who can flourish at United. This entails that they may come from mid level clubs such as Bologna and Lille rather than the top European sides.
