Local pundit Hugo Borst wrote for De Telegraaf: "Poor Erik ten Hag. Or should you say: stupid Erik ten Hag? Because after Alex Ferguson, all the trainers at Manchester United, including top trainers, died.

"The American owners, the Glazers, are holding that club hostage from a distance. Under those circumstances you can never perform. Ten Hag should have known that.

"He, crown prince of the international trainers' guild after impressive years at Ajax, also had plenty of other options last spring. A safe choice for Germany in particular was obvious. But he was overconfident or stubborn - or both.

"He had advised his esteemed colleague against it. 'Manchester United, that would not be wise.' Van Gaal said that publicly very firmly. That Ten Hag absolutely should not do it. There were people who claimed that Louis said that because he was afraid that Ten Hag would do better than he at that rotten club.

"But then they know our national coach is not like that. He doesn't suffer from jealousy. He grants most people the world. Louis can be direct, blunt sometimes, but at the core he is a very warm person."
