Referee Bas Nijhuis has defended his decision not to whistle prior to Ajax’s fifth goal against NEC on Saturday.

Ajax’s Noussair Mazraoui collided with Souffian El Karouani of NEC before play continued and Dušan Tadić notched his second of the match to put the seal on a comprehensive 5-0 victory at Johan Cruyff Arena.

While there was clear contact between Mazraoui’s knee and El Karouani’s head, Nijhuis insisted that it occurred in the normal flow of the game.

Unlike most European leagues, Dutch officials can be quizzed about their decisions by TV stations.

“I was amazed that I had to be in front of the camera,” 44-year-old Nijhuis told ESPN (via Voetbal International).

“I’m on the field and I see an Ajax player coming in who plays the ball away and then there is a collision with a NEC player.

“That’s how I see it on the field, so I let it continue. And my VAR actually sees the same thing.”

Nijhuis, who has been refereeing in the Eredivisie since 2005, is also a UEFA and FIFA listed official.
