Departing Durham defender Abby Holmes has rejoined Sunderland on a free transfer according to reports on The Lady Black Cats’ official website.

The 31-year-old left The Wildcats this afternoon along with forward Nicki Gears. Sunderland announced the capture of Gears just a short time ago and teammate Holmes has quickly followed her to Wearside.

Holmes spent four years with Durham in which she made 78 appearances and netted six goals. The player returns to Sunderland after five years away. She was a member of the side which won promotion to the FA Women’s Super League 1 in 2014 and she then made 34 appearances for The Lady Black Cats in the top flight before leaving the club and enjoying a short spell in The Netherlands with PEC Zwolle.

After securing her Sunderland return, Holmes said “It’s great to be back here – it feels like my career has gone full-circle – and to be back in red and white is exciting.

“I went through all the different stages and played here for 10 years before leaving, so it’s a club and a region I love. Having spent the last four years in the Championship, I feel I can bring a lot of knowledge on what the league is about.

“Sunderland have a young squad and hopefully I can help bring some experience and leadership to the team. I’m excited to be working with Mel (Reay) and Steph (Libbey) again having worked with them both separately before.”

Sunderland now have 18 players contracted with them for the 2022/2023 campaign.
