Newly promoted Betway Premiership side Durban City are poised to land the signature of former Zesco United captain Denis Nya, as they gear up for their inaugural participation in the South African topflight division.

The KZN side has already beefed up the playing squad and the technical team after gaining promotion to the elite league by virtue of clinching the Motsepe Foundation Championship under the tutelage of Simo Dladla last season.

However, City parted ways with Dladla as the two parties couldn’t agree on new personal terms. As a result, experienced mentor Gavin Hunt was roped in to steer the ship, while another veteran in Ernst Middendorp, was installed as the Technical Director.

On the playing personnel, the rookies signed Darren Keet, Haashim Domingo and Thabo Nodada after their exits at the now-relegated Cape Town City. Moreover, the club also signed the 2024/25 Botswana FNB Premiership top scorer and player of the season Jean Lwamba, among others.

Now, sources have indicated that City have bolstered their defense by acquiring the services of center back, Nya, who has been capped by the Super Eagles of Nigeria. The 28-year-old stalwart left Zambian outfit Zesco following the expiry of his contract at the end of last season.

Nya was one of the standout performers in the Zambian league over the past two seasons, scooping individual awards for his performances in the heart of Zesco’s defense, as he helped the team to an ABSA Cup triumph last season.

A well-placed insider close to the matter told this publication that Nya has agreed to ink a one-year deal with an option to extend with City. The player is expected to touch down in South Africa this week to finalize the move.

Nya will bring stability, leadership and experience in City’s defense, having featured for Nigeria in the 2013 under-17 Africa Cup Of Nations (AFCON). Furthermore, the Nigerian defender was part of the Super Eaglets team that won the FIFA under-17 World Cup in UAE.
