For USL Dunkerque, replacing Luís Castro was always going to be a hard task. The Portuguese manager had helped one of Ligue 2’s lowest budgets punch above their means last season, in a campaign that saw Les Maritimes reach the Coupe de France semi-finals and the promotion playoffs.
The club believed they had the answer to Castro’s departure to FC Nantes in the shape of fellow countryman Gonçalo Feio. However, the former Legia Warsaw manager lasted only 23 days before he and the club mutually agreed to end their partnership. The club, run by co-president Demba Ba, will have to act quickly with the season beginning again next month.
Back at square one, Dunkerque’s search has begun again. According to a report from La Voix du Nord, the club could look to offer the role to Gaël Clichy. Yesterday, the retired Arsenal and Manchester City defender left his post as an assistant coach with the France U21s and so is now a free agent.
