Millwall deadline day arrival Duncan Watmore did not expect to leave Middlesbrough or force a move away from the Championship club in the January window, according to Teesside Live.

The Lions confirmed yesterday that the 28-year-old forward had signed permanently for an undisclosed fee and penned a long-term deal at The Den.

Watmore was one of two attackers added to Gary Rowett’s squad late in the window with familiar face Oli Burke also rejoining on loan.

A report from Teesside Live has shed more light on how the forward made the move from Boro to south London.

The report claims that Millwall had been keen on the Sunderland academy graduate from earlier on in January but progress wasn’t made until the 30th when a bid was accepted.

It is said, however, that Watmore did not expect to leave the Riverside nor pushed for a move away this month despite seeing limited opportunities under Michael Carrick.

The Lions and their new forward were forced to wait until Carrick had his replacement, Aston Villa 20-year-old Aaron Ramsey, through the door before the move could be completed.

Watmore looks likely to make his Millwall debut against former club Sunderland on Saturday.

The Verdict

It’s interesting to get some deeper insight into Watmore’s move to Millwall and his approach to his Boro departure.

The 28-year-old appears to have conducted himself with complete professionalism in January despite falling down the pecking order under Carrick.

He should get more opportunities at The Den and will offer Rowett plenty of energy and dynamism.

Boro just have to hope he doesn’t help the Lions secure promotion in their place.
