But arguably the scariest of them all was Duncan Ferguson.

Ferguson was an extremely intimidating striker. He stood at 6 foot 4 inches tall and was as strong as an ox.

He loved a battle on the football pitch and had a very short fuse.

There are many examples which show why he’s considered one of the hardest players in Premier League history.

His clash with Paul Ince is just one example that emphasises that point.

Ince and Ferguson came up against each other on multiple occasions.

Ince could look after himself. There was a reason he was known as ‘The Guv’nor’, after all.

But Ferguson even made Ince look tame when they came up against each other in a Merseyside Derby.

In one match between Liverpool and Everton, Ferguson picked Ince up and launched him at his own teammate.

Ince got up and looked as if he was going to confront Ferguson but thought better of it.

Alan Shearer played alongside Ferguson for Newcastle and against him.

He had no doubt in his mind when naming Ferguson the hardest player in Premier League history.

He told BBC Sport: “I played against him and I played with him. You know when someone has an aura about them. He had a presence when he walked in, the size of him. He had this reputation and he didn’t disappoint. If looks could kill, he could kill you with a look. I don’t know anyone in the game who doesn’t think that about him. You could see the fear in defenders’ eyes in the tunnel.

“To go into battle with him was magnificent. Most defenders were petrified to go near him. He could fight with the best of them, tackle with the best of them. He was unplayable in the air. What a good player he was. He scored an unbelievable half-volley on the turn against Manchester United at St James’ Park. He was the hardest. He was frightened of nothing or no-one.”
