Dual-nationality figure Alejandro Zendejas has committed to the United States men’s national team, opting for the American side over Mexico.

The Club America player was previously eligible to feature for both national teams, having been born in Mexico but raised in the United States. He originally kicked off with the US youth national team, before going on to feature in two friendlies with El Tri.

After several inquiries and an investigation by FIFA, Mexico was forced to forfeit both of the friendlies Zendejas was involved in due to the lack of proper documentation. Zendejas is technically cap-tied to the USMNT, and must file FIFA’s one time switch to officially represent Mexico.

But the player has now announced he will remain with the USMNT, explaining his heart lies with the American team.

“I am very proud of being Mexican American. Values from both cultures have made me the person I am today. I’ve had the privilege of experiencing life in two countries. I am very grateful for all the opportunities the United States and Mexico have provided to me and my family. Making a decision on your international career is very difficult, and I believe in following your heart. Mine tells me that my future lies in representing the USA,” he revealed on social media.

“I am excited for this next chapter and earning my place with the USMNT. Thank you to everyone for the incredible support. #SoloPalante”

The winger most recently featured for the USMNT in January, earning his first senior call under interim manager Anthony Hudson in a friendly vs. Serbia. Though the team has yet to release their roster for the upcoming Nations League matches, Zendejas is expected to receive a call up.
