Ruben Amorim has called himself a ‘dreamer’ and says he has full belief in the players at Manchester United.
Amorim will take charge of the side for the first time at Ipswich Town this weekend, following his appointment as the club’s new head coach. He has replaced Erik ten Hag in the role, following the club’s worst-ever start to a Premier League season.
The 39-year-old arrives from Sporting Lisbon with a growing reputation, having led the capital club to two Primeira Liga titles. The first of those successes ended a 19-year wait to be crowned Portuguese champions. He departed Sporting with the club top of the Primeira Liga table with 11 wins from 11 games this season.
He inherits a Manchester United team languishing in 13th place in the Premier League. However, he outlined his belief that the current squad can be successful.
“I’m a little bit of a dreamer, I believe in myself. I believe in the club, we have the same mindset.
“I truly believe in the players, I know you don’t believe a lot but I do. I want to try new things. You guys don’t think it’s possible, I do.”
Amorim revealed he spoke to compatriot and ex-Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho following his appointment. He previously spent time shadowing Mourinho during the latter’s time at Old Trafford, when working towards his coaching badges after retirement.
“He sent me a message, it’s a big club, lovely club with lovely people, and he’s correct, it still is.
“We are building a new club. I am a different guy. I hope to teach something different here to my players. It’s the best club in England. We want to win, that’s all.”
