One day after the 3-0 win away to 1860 Munich in the first round of the DFB-Pokal, the Black & Yellows faced Turkish top-tier side Antalyaspor in a friendly match. The encounter with the team coached by Nuri Sahin ended in a 1-1 (1-0) draw after 90 minutes.
In the well-attended youth stadium at the training ground in Dortmund-Brackel, BVB head coach Edin Terzic sent out a starting line-up of eleven players who had played little or not at all yesterday. Mateu Morey and Gio Reyna celebrated their comeback to the pitch after around 15 and four months of absence respectively.
It was Reyna who orchestrated the first dangerous piece of attacking play. He found space on the right and played a sharp ball into the centre, which Thorgan Hazard was able to get on the end of. His effort was saved by the visiting goalkeeper, but the follow-up fell to Julian Brandt, who made no mistake from close range to give BVB a 1-0 lead in the eighth minute.
The Black & Yellows dominated the early stages and forced their opponents back deep into their own half. Jamie Bynoe-Gittens (22) and Gio Reyna (23) both came close to scoring. BVB delivered an impressive performance in front of BVB legends such as Lucas Barrios or Toni da Silva. The best chance to score the second goal fell to Bynoe-Gittens, whose shot flew just wide of the target after a strong solo run (30). The crowd of 800 fans applauded as the team went into the dressing room at half-time with a 1-0 lead.
Marcel Lotka, Abdoulaye Kamara and Bradley Fink replaced the returnees Morey and Reyna as well as goalkeeper Alexander Meyer at the beginning of the second half. Shortly before half-time, Antonios Papadopoulos pulled up injured, with Mario Suver coming on to replace him at centre-back.
The away team came out stronger after the break and were rewarded with the equaliser on the hour mark. As the game progressed, BVB took charge once again and had a good chance through Bradley Fink, but his effort was too central to really trouble the goalkeeper (70). Six minutes before the final whistle, a Michael Eberwein header missed by mere inches. The Black & Yellows were determined to win the game and threw a lot of bodies forward in the final minutes. Despite several chances, the game ultimately ended in a 1-1 draw.
BVB: Meyer (46, Lotka) – Morey (46, Kamara), Papadopoulos (43, Suver), Coulibaly, Aning – Can (65, Semic), Brandt (65, Pohlmann), Wolf (65, Bueno), Reyna (46, Fink), Bynoe-Gittens – Hazard (65, Eberwein)
