Dortmund started at a blistering pace and took the lead when Julian Brandt sent Alphonso Davies through a loop before finishing emphatically.

But the advantage lasted just four minutes when a slack error from Mats Hummels gifted Bayern possession, allowing Robert Lewandowski to race beyond him and finish.

It was another mistake at the back that gave the league leaders the lead shortly before half-time when a miscued Raphaël Guerreiro clearance bounced fortuitously for Kingsley Coman and his deflected drive skipped in under the crossbar.

But moments after the restart, Dortmund caught Bayern cold when Jude Bellingham picked out Haaland on the left of the area and he curled a glorious right-footed finish in off the upright to restore parity.

The Norwegian had a chance cleared off the line after Marco Reus was denied a big penalty shout in controversial fashion before an even more contentious decision to award a penalty at the other end allowed Lewandowski to score the winner after Hummels was judged to have handled in the area after an on-field VAR check.

It was a dramatic end to a captivating contest that sees Bayern extend their lead over BVB at the top to four points.
