Chelsea grind out victory away at impressive Brentford

Scorers: Chilwell 45+1′

Chelsea are back on top of the Premier League after a gruelling victory away at Brentford.

Brentford went close to opening the scoring in the 22nd minute when Bryan Mbeumo hit the outside of the post.

Chelsea went straight down the other end and Romelu Lukaku had the ball in the net, but the flag was up for offside.

The Blues did get their noses in front in first half stoppage time, when a loose ball popped up to Ben Chilwell on the edge of the box and the full-back guided home a superb half-volley.

Lukaku had a chance to make it 2-0 in the 70th minute when a Timo Werner effort deflected into his path, but he could only guide his shot over the bar.

Brentford pushed for an equaliser, with Ivan Toney forcing Edouard Mendy into a strong save, before Mbeumo hit the post for a second time.

Next it was Saman Ghoddos’s turn to force Mendy into a save, before Trevoh Chalobah cleared Christian Nørgaard’s follow-up off the line.

Nørgaard went close again in injury time with a brilliant overhead kick, but Man of the Match Mendy was again equal to it and 1-0 was how it finished.

United’s unbeaten away run ends at Leicester

Scorers: Tielemans 31′, Söyüncü 78′, Vardy 83′, Daka 90+1′; Greenwood 19′, Rashford 82′

Manchester United’s record 29-game unbeaten away run came to a shuddering halt in dramatic fashion on Saturday.

After a lively start, it was Mason Greenwood who broke the deadlock at the King Power Stadium with a stunning strike into the top corner.

But Leicester soon levelled and it was Youri Tielemans who scored with a pretty brilliant goal of his own when he lobbed David de Gea from the corner of the box.

Tielemans almost put the Foxes 2-1 up in the second half, but David de Gea did well to tip the Belgian’s shot onto the post.

Moments later Leicester did take the lead, and Çağlar Söyüncü was the scorer when he finished the rebound after De Gea had saved to deny Patson Daka.

But United soon drew level again, with Marcus Rashford scoring on his return from injury.

Only for Jamie Vardy to immediately restore Leicester’s lead at the other end, before Patson Daka wrapped it up in injury time.

City made to work hard by spirited Burnley

Scorers: Bernardo Silva 12′, De Bruyne 70′

We should file Manchester City’s win over Burnley under “hard fought”.

City dominated the opening stages and made the breakthrough when Phil Foden forced a good save from Nick Pope, but Bernardo Silva was close by to sweep in the rebound.

Burnley then had a chance to equalise when Maxwell Cornet found himself in behind the City defence, but Zack Steffen did well to smother it.

Riyad Mahrez went close to making it 2-0 to City early in the second half, but his effort clipped the crossbar on its way over.

The second goal finally did come for City with 20 minutes remaining, when Kevin De Bruyne rattled in left-footed after Burnley had failed to clear their lines.

Wolves come back from the dead to stun Villa

Scorers: Saïss 81′, Coady 85′, Neves 90+5′; Ings 47′, McGinn 67′

A dramatic late comeback saw Wolves somehow come from 2-0 down to beat Aston Villa at Villa Park.

Adama Traoré almost gave Wolves the lead after a powerful run in the 34th minute, only to be denied by Villa goalkeeper Emi Martínez.

But it was Danny Ings who gave Villa the lead early in the second half when he headed home from John McGinn’s cross.

McGinn then got on the scoresheet himself when he made it 2-0 with a low strike that went in with the aid of a slight deflection.

It wasn’t over there however, as Romain Saïss pulled a goal back for Wolves with 10 minutes to go.

Before Conor Coady completed the hosts’ dramatic comeback a few minutes later.

And just when it looked like the points would be shared, Ruben Neves scored from a free-kick to make it 3-2 to Wolves deep into stoppage time.

A sickener for Villa.

Southampton get first win of the season against struggling Leeds

Scorers: Broja 53′

Marcelo Bielsa will be feeling the heat after his disappointing Leeds side were beaten away at Southampton.

Both sides struggled to carve openings in the first half but the breakthrough finally came early in the second half, when Armando Broja gave Saints the lead on his first Premier League start for the club after good work from Nathan Redmond.

Another draw for improving Norwich

Norwich earned their second point of the season with a second consecutive 0-0 draw.

Leandro Trossard almost gave Brighton the lead with a stunning volley in the 36th minute, only for Norwich goalkeeper Tim Krul to tip it onto the crossbar.

Josh Sargent then had a great chance for Norwich just before half-time when a mix up in the Brighton defence presented him with an open goal, but his week effort was cleared off the line by Shane Duffy.

Teemu Pukki had a couple of chances to score for Norwich in the second half but was denied by a combination of poor finishing and excellent defending from Dan Burn.

Clinical Reds ruin Ranieri party

Scorers: Mané 9′, Firmino 38′, 52′, 90′, Salah 54′

Liverpool romped to victory at Vicarage Road with Roberto Firmino bagging a hat-trick and Mohamed Salah scoring another brilliant goal.

The Reds were ahead after just nine minutes when Salah picked out Sadio Mané with an outrageous pass, before he finished easily past Ben Foster.

They doubled their lead when James Milner squared for Firmino who couldn’t miss from two yards out, with the Brazilian netting his brace just after half time.

Salah made it four after scoring another goal of the season contender – taking on four defenders before curling into the corner – meaning he has now scored in eight straight games.

Firmino secured his hat-trick with another close range finish late on after being found by Neco Williams.
