Since Aston Villa made their way back to the Premier League after beating Derby County in the 2019 Championship Play-Off final at Wembley Stadium, the Midlands club have not been shy in splashing out significant amounts of cash to bring new players in and strengthen their side.

One player that the Villans brought in after securing their place back in the Premier League is Douglas Luiz, who made the move to Villa Park from fellow top-flight club Manchester City in the 2019 summer transfer window in a deal worth a reported fee of £15m.

Since then, the Brazilian has gone on to make himself an important figure for Steven Gerrard’s side by racking up 96 appearances for the club across all competitions, chipping in with three goals and eight assists along the way.

This season has seen the 23-year-old, who has been described as “underrated” in the past by Ian Wright, appear in 19 of Villa’s 23 league games, showing how highly rated he is at the club.

His performances this season in the league have also shown what a good signing he has been for the Midlands club, with WhoScored giving him an overall rating of 6.87, making him Villa’s fourth-highest rated player at this stage of the campaign.

Shortly after joining Villa, Transfermarkt had the former City man’s market value listed at £9m, whereas it now stands at a hefty £31.5m, making him the club’s joint-most valuable player alongside fellow recent arrivals Emi Buendia and Ollie Watkins.

That’s a whopping increase of 250% and this shows just how much of a good business deal it was from the Villans to swoop in and sign Luiz from the Manchester club.

Indeed, sporting director Johan Lange certainly struck gold in prizing the Brazilian asset away from the Etihad Stadium.

Moving forward, with Gerrard saying last month that he and his coaching staff rate the midfield maestro “extremely high,” it’ll be interesting to see whether or not the club offer Luiz a new contract before his current one expires in the summer of 2023 or try and sell him to another club to cash in and sign a replacement.

With reports swirling around last month of interest from the likes of Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur in the Brazil international, there could be a big decision made on his future in the coming months, especially if there is still interest in him by the time the next summer transfer window opens.
