Robert Lewandowski returns to face former club

Borussia Dortmund host Barcelona and former star striker Robert Lewandowski in the Champions League tonight.

The Poland forward is back at the ground where he made his name, scoring 103 goals in 187 games, before moving to Bayern Munich a little over 10 years ago.

Despite his years, Lewandowski remains the biggest threat to Dortmund, having already scored 23 goals in 21 games for Barca this term.

But Dortmund’s home record is nothing to be sniffed at and a stuttering Spanish side will have to improve to come away with points to take them above their hosts in the League Phase standings.

Date, kick-off time and venue

Dortmund vs Barcelona is scheduled for an 8pm BST kick-off tonight, Wednesday, December 11, 2024.

Dortmund vs Barcelona team news

Dortmund have battling multiple injuries after Niklas Sule was ruled out for "a few months", joining fellow defender Waldemar Anton and midfielder Julian Brandt on the sidelines, while forwards Maximilian Beier and Karim Adeyemi are both doubtful.

Manager Nuri Sahin is expected to draft captain Emre Can, usually a midfielder, back into defence alongside Nico Schlotterbeck against Barcelona. A decision on Adeyemi will be made closer to kick-off after two months out.

It's more positive for Barcelona, Ronald Araujo and Ferran Torres back from injury to leaving Marc-Andre ter Stegen, Andreas Christensen, Marc Bernal and Ansu Fati as the absentees. Inaki Pena continues to be preferred in goal over Wojciech Szczesny. Robert Lewandowski and Raphina are in fearsome form and will start.

Dortmund vs Barcelona prediction

Barcelona's early season form appears to have evaporated with just two wins from six in La Liga, and they face a daunting task to take on Dortmund's impressive home form of eight wins from nine across all competitions.

Dortmund will be patched up in defence, which will have the likes of Lewandowski, facing his former side of course, licking his lips. It should be an entertaining game, as Hansi Flick looks for his sixth win from six meetings with Dortmund.

1-1 draw.
