25 players, including a minimum of two goalkeepers, are on the so-called A-list that has to be submitted to UEFA until midnight by the participating clubs. There’s a statue that the UEFA implemented to encourage youth academies: Eight of these players have to be ‘locally trained players’ — ergo spent a certain amount of time at one club or at least play within the national federation.
There are two ways for players to qualify as ‘locally trained’. The first criterion: Club-trained players – players who were on a club’s books for three years between the ages of 15 and 21;
The second criterion: Association-trained players – players who were on another club’s books in the same association for three years between the ages of 15 and 21. No club can have more than four association-trained players among their eight ‘local’ nominees on List A. If the club doesn’t meet the criteria of eight “homegrown” players the 25-player list will be trimmed.
BVB fans will quickly notice that Jadon Sancho is missing. But not because Dortmund coach Lucien Favre wants to have a bigger challenge without the young Englishman. Sancho has been put on the “B-list”, from which clubs can nominate players on the night before the Champions League match.
“A player may be registered on List B if he is born on, or after, 1 January 1998 and has been eligible to play for the club concerned for any uninterrupted period of two years since his 15th birthday (players aged 16 may be submitted if they have been registered with the club for the previous two years). Clubs are entitled to register an unlimited number of players on List B during the season, but the list must be submitted by no later than 24:00CET the day before a match,” it says on UEFA.com.
