Lucien Favre has suggested this summer’s transfer saga involving Manchester United has affected Jadon Sancho’s form for Borussia Dortmund this season.

Sancho was subjected to a summer long saga after being identified as the number one transfer target for the Premier League side, though a move ultimately failed to come to fruition as United failed to meet Dortmund’s British transfer-record asking price for the winger.

Dortmund had given the Red Devils a deadline of August 10 to complete a deal for the England international, but the current financial climate saw the Bundesliga side’s valuation deemed as unrealistic by the Old Trafford hierarchy.

Sancho has since begun the new season in underwhelming form and has scored just once in six appearances in all competitions, his solitary goal coming from the penalty spot in a cup thrashing of Duisberg last month.

Ahead of tonight’s Champions League clash against Zenit St Petersburg, Favre has suggested that Sancho may have been affected by the uncertainty surrounding his future.

“Every player has slow periods,” Favre said at his pre-match press conference.

“There was a lot of talk about Jadon during the summer – something like that can be a factor.”

Dortmund head into tonight’s clash needing to secure a positive result after losing at Lazio in their group stage opener, though Favre is refusing to put added pressure on the 20-year-old and says all players have difficult periods of form.

“No player is consistently in top form for an entire year, that’s impossible. You have to accept that.”
