Dorival Júnior praised his side’s set-piece prowess after they blew away Athletico Paranaense on a 5-0 scoreline on Sunday.

All of the goals came in the second half at the Maracanã, with all but one of them coming as a result of headers from corners.

Marinho whipped in two perfect deliveries for centre-back Fabrício Bruno to notch a brace, his first goals since joining the Rubro-Negro from Bragantino in February.

Ayrton Lucas then tapped home the third from open play before Lázaro nodded home another Marinho corner and Pedro was picked out by in stoppage time by Marinho’s replacement Giorgian de Arrascaeta.

Commenting on the effectiveness of the Mengão from dead balls, manager Júnior said: “The weaknesses are relative, because it was a different team from Athletico.

“We prefer to focus much more on our team, on repetition, seeking better results. We have players who attack the ball well, and they have been positive in practically every game.

“These are important goals that are coming. That’s why we will continue to focus on our team. The result is a reflection of training.”

The win moved Flamengo up to second in the Brasileirão table, though they are still nine points behind leaders Palmeiras.

“We have to try to play our part. It’s no use thinking about what opponents are doing. If we do our results, then we see what the round presents us with,” Júnior said.

“I know the distance is great, but we will not give up. Let’s go all the way to try to put as much pressure on it as possible.”

The title chase will be put on hold in midweek, as Fla face Athletico again in the second leg of their delicately poised (0-0 from the first leg) Copa do Brasil quarter-final.
