Flamengo manager Dorival Júnior paid tribute to veteran midfielder Diego Ribas in the wake of Sunday’s 1-0 defeat at Coritiba.

Alef Manga’s second-half penalty (which was conceded by Diego) proved the difference between the sides as the Copa Libertadores winners slipped to a second successive defeat in the Brasileirão.

As has become custom in the league recently, Júnior sent out a mostly second-string starting XI.

That meant that 37-year-old Diego, who announced on Saturday that he would retire at the end of the season, was given the nod for what will be one of the last games of his career.

The club captain lasted 63 minutes at the Estádio Couto Pereira before being replaced by Mateusão.

“Players like Diego are very important,” Júnior said afterwards, per UOL.

“Not only on the pitch but in the locker room. This has been a differential for us over the last few years. I have to congratulate him on his beautiful career, the dignity with which he is finishing.

“It was an example that should be followed and praised by everyone who likes to see things done well.

“Diego is one of those guys who takes situations safely, dedicating himself to the fullest. Hence the longevity of a victorious career, with great achievements and great clubs.

“Natural that he ended up taking a position, we have to respect and thank him for everything.”

Flamengo, who now lie fifth in the table, have just two games remaining in their league campaign.
