Jordan James could be set for a return to the EFL with Wrexham after his departure from Birmingham City in 2024.

According to L’Equipe, the Red Dragons are one of three clubs seeking a deal for the 21-year-old, with the Championship side submitting a €5 million (£4.3 million) offer.

The Welshman made 23 appearances in Ligue 1 last season, including 14 starts, but he did not feature for Rennes in their opening league fixture of the new campaign last weekend against Marseille, as he was left as an unused substitute.

It’s believed Serie A side Parma are also eyeing the midfielder, albeit only on loan, with another unnamed side from the second tier of English football also in the mix - could that be Birmingham?

When asked if the Blues should be looking to bring James back to St. Andrew’s after Wrexham made their move, FLW’s Birmingham fan pundit Jason Moore claimed they should steer clear of a deal.

He believes that the youngster is not good enough to get game time in Chris Davies’ side, but encouraged Wrexham that he’d be a solid addition to their squad.

“Personally, I don’t think Blues will get involved as I don’t think he comes anywhere near what we’ve got in midfield,” Moore told Football League World.

“He’s a good player, he does a job potentially in the French league and I think he’s about at the level Wrexham want currently.

“I wouldn’t want Blues to touch him.

“Good enough player, he’ll do a job for Wrexham.

“I’d like the fee to be a little bit higher purely because Blues make a bit more profit on it, but I definitely don’t think Blues should get involved.

“I don’t think he’s good enough to impact the midfield, especially for us where we want to go.

“I think it’s a good buy for Wrexham cause he’s young, got a ton of energy, and he’s sort of what they’re about, hard-working team.

“He’s Welsh as well, seems to be all they’re doing currently, just buying Welsh players.

“So, good buy for Wrexham, but not for us I don’t think - we don’t need him.

“We could do with a holding midfielder, but Jordan James isn’t it.”

James came through the Birmingham academy system and made 95 league appearances for the club before joining Rennes last year.

Jordan James reunion wouldn’t make sense for Birmingham City or the player himself

James left Birmingham to compete at a higher level in the top flight of France, where he has earned semi-regular game-time.

Meanwhile, Blues have since invested heavily in the squad, particularly midfield, and are now setting their sights on the Premier League, with a stacked midfield unit to boot.

A reunion would just be a step backwards for both clubs, even if he is potentially available for less than they sold him for just a year ago.

However, he could prove a smart signing for Wrexham if he can be convinced to take that step back to the Championship - and it would be another Wales international to add to their ranks.
