Former Arsenal winger Marc Overmars has urged Manchester United misfit Donny van de Beek to stay and fight his way into the starting line-up (story via Dutch media NOS).

“I think Donny should just fight, stay next year and try to claim a starting place – you should not leave so quickly,” the 48-year-old said as relayed by Sports Mole.

The Netherlands international joined United in a £35 million deal last summer on the back of an outstanding season at Ajax.

Van de Beek’s impressive showings for the Lancers during the 2018/19 campaign brought him into the spotlight, with the Red Devils fighting off stiff competition to secure his services.

However, the move has not worked out, with the 24-year-old making just two Premier League starts under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer this term.

Fred, Scott McTominay and Nemanja Matic are all ahead of the versatile midfielder in the pecking order, which has prompted rumours over a potential summer departure.

With a congested midfield filled with experienced players, the ex-Ajax starlet has found it hard to break into Solskjaer’s first team.

Van de Beek is a very energetic presence in the centre of the park with his constant movement between the lines.

Known for his daring carries and quick-thinking passes, the Dutchman is more than capable of creating something special in the front third.

Unfortunately, he has showcased too little of his Ajax form at Old Trafford, which could spell the end of his Premier League career as early as this summer.

However, United are thought to be keen on keeping van de Beek after handing him a five-year contract last summer.

Contracted to the Threatre of Dreams until 2025, van de Beek is a transfer target for Roma and Borussia Dortmund.
