Gianluigi Donnarumma has admitted that he loves returning to San Siro, and that he still feels a strong connection to the city of Milan.

Donnarumma’s exit in the summer of 2021 left a bitter taste for a lot of Milan fans as he left the club where he came through to academy to join Paris Saint-Germain and he went on a free transfer, meaning the Rossoneri got nothing.

His return to San Siro to face Milan in the Champions League last season showed how many still feel. He was jeered loudly when his name was read, insults and chants were aimed at him while fake money with his face on rained down from the stands.

Previously, his agent Enzo Raiola has tried to pin the blame on the Diavolo, stating that they had no intention of renewing his deal and that he was pushed out so Mike Maignan could arrive. Only those who were involved ultimately know the real truth.

Donnarumma gave an interview to Rai Sport at the end of the game and also spoke to journalists in the mixed zone, with his comments relayed by MilanPress.

“Coming here is always special, San Siro is a unique stadium and I will always carry this with me. My heart is here in Milan, I grew up here. Thanks to those who have always supported me,” he said.

“I’m happy, also because I spent many years here and to find a stadium like this again is exciting. Thanks also to the people who welcomed me well and that’s what I wanted to hear. It touched me a lot and I’m very happy.”

Given the links with Inter, he was asked if a large part of the stadium would want to see him at San Siro for a long time: “I’m very happy (laughs). These are situations that will be seen later. In the meantime, I’m happy to be back because I really missed Italy, San Siro and my teammates.”
