A familiar face has returned to BMO Field as Toronto FC complete the signing of center-back Doneil Henry.

The 29-year-old was the first homegrown player to sign with TFC back in 2010, going on to make 93 appearances for the club before departing for Premier League side West Ham United five years later.

Since then, Henry has spent loan spells with Blackburn Rovers and AC Horsens before returning to Major League Soccer with the Vancouver Whitecaps and, most recently, LAFC, with a period at South Korean side Suwon Samsung Bluewings between.

Henry became available after being waived by LAFC earlier in July, unable to get past the likes of Jesus Murillo, Mamadou Fall, Sebastian Ibeagha, and Eddie Segura on the center-back depth chart - a job that became even harder following the arrival of Italian legend Giorgio Chiellini.

The defender returns to Toronto on a deal through 2022.

“Doneil has good experience in the league and can provide us with some backline depth,” Toronto head coach and sporting director Bob Bradley said in a club press release. “He obviously has strong ties to Toronto and to the club and we know he’s excited to rejoin the team.”

Henry is capped 44 times for the Canadian Men's National Team, scoring once, and played five matches during their recent successful World Cup qualifying campaign.
