Doncaster Rovers manager Grant McCann has lavished praise on Manchester United’s youngsters after his team lost on penalties to United’s under 21 side in the Bristol Street Motors Trophy clash on Tuesday night.
Travis Binnion’s side once again fought back from a losing position to secure a 3-3 draw on the night, after having previously come from two goals down to beat Barnsley 3-2 in the first group game.
They would later secure the extra bonus point on penalties.
Ethan Ennis gave the young Red Devils the lead before the home side responded with three goals to take charge of the match.
Not knowing when to give up though, United fought back with two late strikes by Ennis again and defender Louis Jackson in the fifth minute of stoppage time.
Speaking after the match, the Doncaster boss spoke highly about the Carrington products during his post-match interview with their in house media.
He stated, “we are playing against a good [side]. They are good players, these lads.”
“Some of them are going to be future superstars for United or some other teams in the Premier League and you give them half a sniff and they will punish you.”
The Red Devils will hope this is the case as new owners Ineos have expressed how important it is for the club to continue to produce successful young players.
Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho’s rapid rise from Youth Cup to FA Cup winners in only two years proves the old mantra that “if you are good enough, you are old enough”, is very much alive and kicking at Old Trafford.
Ethan Wheatley, who started the game, already made his first team debut last season.
Left back Harry Amass impressed on United’s pre-season tour of the United States of America and will be hoping to break into the first team in the not so distant future as the club continue to have injury problems in this department.
United’s under 21s currently top their group with five points from two games and will hope to secure top spot when they take on Huddersfield Town on the 12th of November.
