Chelsea are the Club World Cup champions, and as much fun as the game was, it couldn’t have been more American if it tried.
Michael Buffer before the kick off, a half time show, and then to cap it off, Donald Trump (who got a few boos when he appeared on the pitch) lifting the trophy with the players.
It was reminiscent of Superbowls, where team owners get to lift the trophy before the players who have dedicated their lives to it. Sadly politics loves to use football for it’s own end, and seeing Trump and the ghastly Gianni Infantino muscle in on the players’ glory was an awful reminder of that.
It looks like Trump was supposed to hand over the medals and the trophy and then retire – but he stuck around and will now be immortalised in the memories of this glorious moment. And to think John Terry was getting stick in 2012!

Away from that unfortunate moment, there was plenty to enjoy form the ceremony. Robert Sanchez got his golden glove for the best goalkeeper after overcoming some major criticism, Cole Palmer got his best player award, and so many of the squad players who played their part in this superb and somewhat unexpected triumph.
Now, finally, almost a full year after starting their European campaign against Servette, this group get a break. We hope they enjoy it – the Premier League is back in a month’s time, and this season is going to be just as long and intense as the last one.
Oh and it has a World Cup at the end of it – so this likely isn’t the last we will see of Trump with a big FIFA trophy anytime soon.
