Don Hutchison urges Everton fans to be more like Newcastle United fans | OneFootball

Everton fans have been urged to be more like Newcastle United fans.

The appeal has come from Don Hutchison, who used to play for Everton.

Hutchison grew up in Gateshead as a Newcastle United fan, however, his career path saw him start off playing for Hartlepool, before signing for Liverpool. Going on to play for a host of other clubs as well, including the scouse mackems and the real thing, turning out for Sunderland.

The weekend saw the Goodison Park club reach safety with three games remaining, thanks to a 1-0 home win over Brentford.

After the game, one of the Toffees’ fans on Twitter praised the Everton fans group ‘The 1878s’ for the flag display they put on for Saturday’s match.

Everton fan Mark Thomas on Twitter – 27 April 2024:

“Take a bow The 1878s.

“You’ve had a busy week.

“And you delivered magnificently.

“Thank you.”

Don Hutchison replied to that Everton fan’s Twitter post:

“Can I just say.

“Wor Flags do this for every Newcastle United home game.

“Please can the Everton fans do the same.

“Honestly it makes such a massive difference to the players.

“Well played boys.

“UTFT.”

Fair play to any football fans who put their time and effort into these kind of initiatives.

However, I was amused by some of the responses from Everton fans, to what Don Hutchison said about Newcastle United fans and Everton supporters, with regard to the respective flag displays at Goodison Park and St James’ Park.

Some (most?) Everton fans clearly desperate to believe that the Newcastle United owners are funding the spectacular displays at St James’ Park, unlike at Goodison Park where the more modest flag displays are funded by Everton fans.

There is of course no comparison between the flag displays at Everton and Newcastle United, the ones at St James’ Park totally on another level to what happens at Goodison Park.

However, there is no difference in terms of how they are funded.

As we (Newcastle United fans) all know, the brilliant work of Wor Flags, so much time and effort and intelligence, is funded by thousands of fellow NUFC supporters supplying the cash to pay for all the home displays we see at St James’ Park.

The flag displays at St James’ Park are so much bigger and better than at Goodison Park for two reasons.

Firstly, the creativity of Wor Flags’ main people and the number of volunteers who support them physically laying out the displays.

Secondly, the fact that compared to Everton, far more Newcastle United fans donate far more money to fund the displays. EVERY home match.

The departure of Mike Ashley in October 2021 meant the return of Wor Flags to matches, as they ended their boycott.

The pre-match flag displays once again becoming part of the matchday routine.

Ahead of the first home match of the 2022/23 season, Wor Flags invited all fans to consider helping them with future flag displays by setting up a regular monthly donation to assist in funding them (See below how to get involved).
